BATTLE OF KYIV
MARCH 9, 2022
In 480 B.C.. a small army of 7000 troops led by 300 brave warriors from the Greek state of Sparta withstood the might of the Persian invading army for seven days. Herodotus. a contemporary historian, estimated the number of the massive army assembled by King Xerxes at over one million. Modern scholars estimate the force to be 150,000 plus.
No matter the number, the contest was a David and Goliath battle between the good, fighting for FREEDOM and the evil, attacking its neighbor for domination and exploitation.
The Battle of Thermopylae fought over 2500 years ago has been celebrated and remembered in the history books, in poems and in film. The cry of the 300 Spartans in defiance of the overwhelming army they faced to lay down their arms was ” Come and Get Them.”
History repeats itself. Today we see another courageous people fighting for freedom, for their families and their country against overwhelming odds. Today the words from the Ukrainian President Zelensky when offered a way out to safety for himself declared, ” I need Ammunition, Not a Ride.”
His words and commitment to action have inspired a nation and have reached across time and borders. Will the leaders of our world reject what Mahatma Gandhi called one of the seven deadly sins =”Politics Without Principle.” Or will they give in to the “Pettiness of Politics.”
The heroes of Thermopylae were betrayed by one of their own who showed the invading army a secret pass around the blockade. Let us pray the heroes of Kyiv are not betrayed by the loopholes around the sanctions designed to stop the war.
